Mary Lou McDonald sends message of warning about Covid-19 from her home after diagnosis

Mary Lou McDonald has sent a message of warning to her followers that "you don't want this virus in your home".

The Sinn Fein leader revealed on Tuesday afternoon that she tested positive for the disease and had been isolating at home.

The Dublin politician has urged people to follow guidelines and make sure they do not infect themselves or loved ones with the killer virus.

In a video message, Mrs McDonald said: "I want to say this, you don't want to get this virus, you don't want this virus in your home or in your family.

"So please, stay home, stay apart, stay safe. I'll be back on Monday and we have a lot of work to do because we have to bring a huge amount of change.

"I'm determined we are going to do just that."

Earlier the politician announced: "Yesterday afternoon, I received a positive diagnosis for Covid-19 having been tested on Saturday, 28th March.

"The Public Health Doctor informs me that I am no longer infected or infectious, and this is a great relief after weeks of being very unwell.

“I had a setback in my recovery at the weekend and developed post-viral pleurisy in my right lung. I am on medication and responding very well, and I fully expect to be back at work next Monday.

“My thoughts and solidarity are with everyone who is sick at this time, and my gratitude is with our Doctors, nurses, carers and everyone who looks after us.

Simon Harris says there will be 'no return to normal life' after restrictions lifted

“My sympathy is with every bereaved family. I am heartbroken for you.

“My appeal to everyone is to stay safe, stay home and stay apart. You do not want to get this virus.

“Thanks to everyone who has asked after me and sent good wishes. Your kindness is much appreciated and I'll be back next week. There is much work to be done - Ireland must change for the better.”
