Mary Lou McDonald

Mary Lou McDonald: 'It's a damning indictment of Fianna Fail and Fine Gael that normal people can't buy their own homes'

You should be able to buy your own home if that is your hope.

As Taoiseach, making home ownership affordable again for those on average incomes would be one of my main goals.

After the decades of damage done to our housing system by bad policies, you deserve support from the State that allows you to purchase a house at an affordable price with confidence and security for the future.

Fianna Fail’s developers scheme does nothing to make housing affordable.

In fact, it will do the exact opposite. It will push prices up and keep a whole generation locked out of home ownership. It is not about you or your family’s future. It has been written by developers for developers.

That is why Sinn Fein brought a motion before the Dail last week to scrap it.

It is incredible that the best defence Micheal Martin could muster for the scheme is that “it is not as dangerous as is being made out”. That is no defence at all.

I suppose we shouldn’t have expected anything different from a government that believes that €380,000 for a three bedroom house is affordable. Honestly, what planet are they living on?

This latest scam is brought to you by the party that brought us the last disastrous housing bubble and drove our economy off a cliff.

We all remember the years darkened by the memories of house repossessions. We all know of a family who lost their home during the last crash.

This was the result of daft policies like this latest developers scheme. It will put a new generation of homeowners at risk.

Micheal Martin spent the best part of a decade asking you to trust Fianna Fail again. But the second they are back in the saddle it is a case of ‘here we go again’.

Fianna Fail cowboys are back in charge of housing and the developers are back control. It is ordinary people who are paying the price.

Young couples squeeze into the box rooms of their parents’ house with their own children while they try to save for a deposit for an unaffordable mortgage.

Families who have given up on owning their place now sticking a massive chunk of their wages on extortionate rents. People behind held back and prevented from getting on in life.

This Fianna Fail developers scheme does absolutely nothing to end all of this misery.

It is hard to believe that there was a time when the goal of buying your home was a modest aspiration for working people. Couples knuckled down, worked hard, saved their money and were rewarded with the opportunity to buy a home at an affordable price.

It is wrong and it is a damning indictment of Fianna Fail and Fine Gael that so many people feel that such a humble ambition is beyond them.

We have to get back to that place. We have to give people a chance. Workers and families need homes they can afford.

Eoin O Broin’s housing plan would deliver thousands of homes at prices working people can afford.
