Mary Kennedy 'officially' leaving RTE this September after 40 years with broadcaster

Mary Kennedy has said she is "officially" leaving RTE this September after celebrating her milestone 65th birthday.

The much loved TV presenter has fronted Nationwide for the past 15 years, as well as presenting Open House with Marty Whelan, Up for the Match and the Eurovision Song Contest.

However, Mary explained that it is up to the national broadcaster whether or not she remains on air.

Asked if she was leaving RTE after reaching retirement age this September, she said: "Officially yes."

Mary told the RTE Guide : "I'd love to stay but it's up to RTE if I go or not.

"All I can say is that I love what I do and I would love it to continue."

On that subject, the Dublin based broadcaster previously told RSVP Magazine: "Everybody has to think about it [retirement]. I haven’t fully thought about it though because I love Nationwide and meeting people.

"The show provides a really important vehicle for the sense of community we have in the country. People helping each other and staying in touch is not something you get around the world, it is quite unique to Irish people.

"Nationwide is very strong at naturing that sense of identity we have as Irish people."

After a very tough 12 months last year, 2019 is proving to be a big year for Mary after she recently became a first time grandmother- and she has another family wedding coming up. While it was such good news for her daughter Eva and her husband Benny, Mary was still nervous about the birth.

She explained: "I was afraid when it coming up to the time of the birth, thinking what if I don't feel all those emotions? But those feelings grow and grow. Now every morning I ask them to send more photographs of him.

"I babysat him for the first time on my own recently. He was an angel, he went to bed at 9.15pm and that was the last I saw of him."

Mary wouldn't change any part of her life right now and she is really excited to see what the future brings for her and her family.

"People ask me 'Is there a stage in life you would like to go back to?' and I say no. I wouldn't change where I am right now for the world. I love the stage my children are at.

"I love that there is a grandchild in the family. I love the fact that there is a family wedding, and maybe more, to look forward to. So right now all is good," she said.
