Mary-Kate Olsen officially files for divorce from Olivier Sarkozy on day New York courts reopen

It was previously reported that Mary-Kate Olsen encountered difficulties in seeking a divorce from her husband Olivier Sarkozy, due to courts being closed during the coronavirus pandemic. According to new documents, the fashion designer has since been able to officially file for divorce - on the very day New York courts reopened.

Olsen has been married to the French businessman for over four years and previously asked for an emergency court order to file while courts were closed. It was later denied by a judge as her case was deemed “not essential” according to New York courts spokesperson Lucian Chalfen.

Both People and Page Six reported that new legal documents showed Olsen filed for divorce yesterday after courts opened an electronic filing system.

Yesterday was also a public holiday in the United States, with many celebrating as various states have begun to ease lockdown restrictions.

She is said to have filed in New York County Supreme Court.

Prior to her official filing, Olsen is believed to have signed a petition to divorce Sarkozy on April 17 though courts were not accepting divorce filings at the time. TMZ continued that she had asked for an emergency court order to speed up the process as Sarkozy’s attorneys reportedly told her to move all of her property from her shared home with Sarkozy by May 18.

At the time, New York had a strict stay-at-home order in place and the outlet claimed her attorneys said the lease had been “terminated...without her knowledge.”

Olsen is believed to have asked for an extension on the move out deadline and for an expedited divorce filing, as her belongings would have been protected by a court order - meaning Sarkozy would have been unable to dispose of them. It is also said that she asked for a prenuptial agreement to be enforced.

The Evening Standard previously reached out to Olsen’s representatives about the matter, but received no response.

Olsen and Sarkozy were married in 2015 and have no children together, although Sarkozy has two from a previous marriage.
