Mary J. Blige Launches Fund To Support Underserved Women

Mary Cosby

Mary J. Blige, the iconic singer and newly announced Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, is making a significant impact in her hometown of Yonkers, New York. Blige, known as the 'queen of hip-hop soul,' has launched the 'Strength of a Woman Festival and Summit' in partnership with Pepsi to give back to the community that supported her at the beginning of her career.

The festival and summit aim to uplift and educate underserved women in Yonkers. Through a collaboration with Pepsi, a fund of $100,000 has been established to provide grants to local organizations that work towards empowering women in the community.

Blige expressed her joy and fulfillment in being able to support the women in Yonkers, stating, 'It's everything that my movement is about. I always wanted to give back, especially to the women in Yonkers.'

Blige's journey has been marked by personal struggles, including battles with depression, substance abuse, and an abusive relationship. However, she has emerged stronger and more determined to help others through her music and personal experiences.

The 'Strength of a Woman Festival and Summit,' launched in 2022, is a multi-day event featuring panels, concerts, and opportunities for fellowship. The newly established fund, in partnership with United Way of Westchester and Putnam, will provide grants ranging from $5,000 to $20,000 to organizations supporting education, financial stability, and food security programs.

Blige recently returned to Yonkers to announce the fund during a surprise appearance at Westchester Community College. This year, the festival and summit will be held in New York City from May 10-12, attracting attendees from around the world.

Blige's commitment to giving back to her community and empowering women serves as an inspiration to many. More information about the 'Strength of a Woman' event can be found on the official website.
