Mary Coughlan admits she had to be picked up off the floor in the middle of the night after drinking instead of feeding her newborn

Iconic singer Mary Coughlan has confessed how her ex-husband Frank Bonadio found her passed out after she drank a bottle of tequila instead of feeding her newborn baby.

The singer has two children with Bonadio – Clare and Cian – before the couple split in 2003 after he told her he had an affair with their Spanish au pair.

But Mary - who was abused when she was a child by her grandfather and two extended family members - recalled her drinking habits while she was married to Bonadio, saying at one point he found her passed out from drinking in the middle of the night when she was supposed to be feeding newborn daughter, Clare.

She said: “Back when Clare was six weeks old, I went out and bought a bottle of tequila – we were visiting his parents in Santa Barbara at the time – and I ended up on the floor in the middle of the night.

“I was supposed to be breastfeeding a child. He didn’t know what to do.

“What the f***. A six-week-old baby,” she told the Sunday Independent’s People and Culture magazine.

Mary confessed that she understands why her ex cheated on her, saying: “He did it, I’m sure, out of anger towards me leaving him.

“I left him with four children to rear, when I was drinking. Including a six-week-old baby, you know?”

The 66-year-old said she got sober when Clare was two and “never looked back”.
