Mary Berry shares personal heartbreak behind new book

  • TV chef Mary Berry is releasing her first gardening book, My Gardening Life, a horticultural memoir and guide published just before her 91st birthday.
  • She shares that gardening became a significant source of comfort and therapy after the tragic death of her son, William, in a 1989 car accident.
  • Berry's lifelong passion for gardening began in her childhood in wartime Bath, where she grew flowers and her father cultivated vegetables.
  • The book also touches upon her personal resilience, including contracting polio at 13, which, despite physical challenges, shaped her positive outlook.
  • “Will was a great child and if he walked in the door right now, I’d say 'Where have you been?’ she told RTE. “The only thing is I’d expect him to be still 19 and not 52."
