Marvin Rees raises doubts over Bristol's climate emergency targets

Doubts have surfaced over whether Bristol will hit its zero-carbon targets after Marvin Rees appeared less than certain.

The city council became the first local authority in the country to declare a climate emergency in November 2018 with a bold pledge to make Bristol carbon neutral by 2030.

Asked this week how confident he was of that being achieved, the Labour candidate to be re-elected city mayor stopped short of saying the city was on track.

Mr Rees told The Cable’s Bristol Unpacked podcast: “It’s massively challenging but we’ve got to have that target.

“I am confident we’re going to do everything possible to meet that target, but it will focus minds.

“We need Government to frontload investment in green infrastructure to enable cities to deliver.

“So I’m confident we are doing everything we can to get there but we know it’s a massively challenging target, but it is the right one to have.”

The 2018 climate emergency motion was tabled by Green Cllr Carla Denyer and received overwhelming support.

Bristol City Council has since also declared an ecological emergency.

The podcast, released on Monday, April 26, can be heard here.
