Marvin Rees announces temporary site for vehicle dwellers to prevent spread of coronavirus

The mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees has announced that the Portway Rugby Development Centre will be used as a temporary site to house vehicle dwellers.

It comes as Bristol City Council has introduced various measures across the city to try and halt the spread of the virus.

It's in association with Bristol Water and the British Red Cross who have been helping to put the site together.

In a video posted to the council's Twitter account, Mr Rees explained the decision making process behind opening the temporary site.

Planning applications near you:

He said: "We are opening alternative temporary sites for vehicle dwellers.

"It's really important that we find suitable space off the highway both for their own safety and for the wider safety of the Bristol residents.

"So the first site, which is at Portway Rugby Development Centre on the A4 at Portway/Sea Mills will offer 25 different pitches.

"All facilities will obviously be there for people to clean, wash and take care of themselves.

"Now we're contacting local residents next to the site to reassure them of the steps we are putting in place and remember this is a temporary arrangement.

"I just want to thank Vehicles for Change for their support in this area."
