Marvin Compper defends Celtic contribution as he recalls 'disappointing' Neil Lennon stance

Celtic flop Marvin Compper has defended his contribution to the club, insisting he helped out the youngsters.

The German centre-back was signed for £1million by Brendan Rodgers, but played just one match.

His only appearance came in a Scottish Cup quarter-final against Morton, with the defender leaving last summer.

Compper told The Herald : "I hoped to give Celtic a part of my experience to help the team grow. Unfortunately it never quite came to that.

"Brendan's vision was for me to be one of the experienced group and help the team be more stable, especially in Europe.

"If I would have stayed healthy at the beginning, it might have come to that. But when you come to a club and get injured in a training camp and some niggles here and there, the doubts begin to rise.

"By the time I got a training rhythm and would have been ready to get a chance and prove myself, by that time the ship had already sailed.

"I still had the feeling that I could give the team some experience and I'm convinced I did, on a different level from being on the pitch and playing.

"I'm sure if some players were asked if I contributed anything to them or their development, some of them might say I gave them advice."

When Compper did finally get fit Neil Lennon had replaced Brendan Rodgers on the bench and the defender was told he had no future at Parkhead.

He recalled: "When Brendan left and Neil came in I think he was pleased with my training performances and I was hoping to get a shot under him.

"But, if it was a political thing or if he just didn't like me as a player, I will never know. I was sent to the reserves.

"If I had got a chance and didn't perform at the level needed at Celtic, I would have understood that my time was over at that level.

"But having had a period where I was in shape and ready, and not being in the plans of the manager, that was disappointing.

"There's no bad blood or anything, it was just very unfortunate circumstances."
