Marvin Bartley hails Rangers fans for 'uplifting' reaction to taking the knee before opening game

Livingston player/assistant manager Marvin Bartley has praised the Rangers fans for their ‘uplifting’ response to the players taking the knee.

The now customary pre-match gesture to raise awareness of the Black Lives Matter movement has been dropped by some clubs south of the border and in Scotland.

But it remained for today’s Scottish Premiership opener at Ibrox.

Bartley, who has been a big advocate for the anti-racism movement and has spoken out often against racism and the booing of the gesture at other grounds around the UK, admitted he was nervous ahead of the game.

This was the first Scottish top flight match with fans inside the stadium for the taking of the knee and the former Hibs man was unsure as to how the 23,000 crowd would react.

But he was delighted with the response and took to social media to thank the Gers supporters for their support.

He tweeted: “I was extremely nervous about taking the knee today with fans in the stadium!

“The Rangers fans were absolutely fantastic during it and they should be applauded massively because if it had gone the other way headlines would have been written.

“I thank you all, truly uplifting!”

Rangers won the game 3-0 thanks to goals from Ianis Hagi, Scott Wright and Kemar Roofe.
