Insomniac Games is not shying away from Wolverine’s brutal reputation. Following the game’s latest gameplay reveal, the studio confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine will feature the bloody, visceral combat fans have been expecting, while also offering players the option to tone it down.
Speaking with Variety after the gameplay showcase, Insomniac creative director Marcus Smith said the new footage was intended to prove that the PlayStation 5 exclusive is fully embracing the mature side of Logan’s character.
“There was a lot of speculation about, especially Insomniac creating this game, were we going to be able to create that visceral high action that one would expect from a Wolverine game?” Smith said. “And the answer is, yeah, absolutely.”
The gameplay trailer showcased Logan slicing through enemies with his adamantium claws, complete with dismemberment, blood effects, and brutal finishing moves. According to game director Mike Daly, the violence was always a core part of the game’s identity because of who Wolverine is as a character.
“As a character who lives in our grounded video game world, but has these adamantium claws and this dark past, there was really no turning away from the violence that we’d need to put into the game in order to really live up to the character,” Daly said.
Despite leaning heavily into the action, the developer confirmed players who are uncomfortable with graphic violence will have options. Smith revealed that Marvel’s Wolverine includes accessibility settings that allow users to disable blood effects and choose a low-gore experience.
“We also understand that some people are squeamish when it comes to blood, and we do have an accessibility option to turn it off and do low-gore paths,” Smith explained.
The interview also shed light on how Wolverine’s iconic healing factor will work in gameplay. Rather than making Logan completely immortal as canon to his comics, Insomniac has built a health system around his regenerative abilities.
According to Daly, Logan isn’t completely immortal. He can die if his heart stops, and his healing factor can no longer kick in. Outside of combat, Wolverine quickly regenerates to full health without relying on health packs or consumables. In battle, however, his healing slows significantly, forcing players to stay aggressive and capitalize on combat opportunities to recover health and stay alive.
The most unique twist comes when Logan is pushed to the brink of death. If players have built up enough Rage, Wolverine can effectively revive himself mid-fight through an adrenaline-fueled healing surge, giving him a second chance to finish the battle. The mechanic was briefly showcased during the gameplay reveal when Logan’s body visibly regenerated after suffering fatal damage.
Marvel’s Wolverine launches exclusively on PS5 on Sept. 15, delivering what Insomniac describes as the “ultimate Wolverine fantasy” through brutal combat, mutant-powered abilities, and a mature story centered on Logan. Preorders have already started for players.
