Insomniac Games' "Marvel's Wolverine" has become a major talking point after its latest gameplay showcase. The extended footage offered a much closer look at the upcoming PS5 exclusive.
Fans saw new story sequences, character interactions, traversal mechanics, and brutal combat. The showcase also featured a major battle against a Sentinel.
However, the footage did not receive universal praise. Parts of the presentation quickly became the subject of criticism and jokes across social media.
'Wolverine' Gameplay Sparks Online Debate
One of the most discussed moments involved Wolverine tracking The Hand by following a red scent trail. Some viewers immediately compared the mechanic to the infamous yellow paint used in many modern action games.

According to IGN, the comparison became a hot potato. Critics questioned whether the visual guidance system felt too obvious or similar to mechanics seen in other games.
The Wolverine and Sabretooth confrontation also attracted attention. Some viewers criticized the voice acting during the encounter.
The Sentinel boss fight faced another wave of comparisons. Players pointed to older games, including "Ben 10: Protector of Earth" and "2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine," when discussing similarities between the encounters.
The reactions quickly spread across gaming communities. Some were genuine concerns about the game, while others appeared to be driven largely by internet jokes.
Insomniac Games Responds to the Criticism
Insomniac is aware of the reaction. Speaking with TheGamer, "Marvel's Wolverine" director Mike Daly appeared relatively comfortable with the criticism.
Daly suggested that strong opinions are inevitable when developing a game centered on such a recognizable superhero.
He described the situation as a "good problem to have." The comment reflects the reality of working with a character who already has a large and passionate fan base.
According to Daly, Insomniac is not trying to design the game around every individual complaint. The studio's priority is creating what it believes will be the best possible Wolverine game.
That means staying focused on the character and the overall experience rather than reacting to every criticism that appears online.

'Marvel's Wolverine' Combat Gets Praise
The gameplay showcase may have received mixed reactions, but the response from players who have actually experienced the game has been more encouraging.
IGN's Mitchell Saltzman praised the combat after getting hands-on time with "Marvel's Wolverine." His impressions suggested that the fighting system successfully captures Wolverine's aggressive style while also offering solid gameplay mechanics.
That could be an important strength for the game.
Wolverine is naturally suited to close-range combat. His claws, healing factor, and animalistic fighting style give Insomniac plenty of opportunities to create a distinctive combat system.
The bigger challenge will be keeping those mechanics interesting throughout the full campaign.
