After last week’s action-packed season premiere, What If…? is back with another mind-bending alternate universe , this time exploring the question: what if Yondu found a young Prince T’Challa, who consequently went on to become Star-Lord instead of Black Panther?
The second episode, which was released on Disney Plus this morning, is full of big surprises and fun guest stars , including Karen Gillan as Nebula, Michael Rooker as Yondu and a wildly different role for Thanos (voiced by Josh Brolin).
What If…? episode two also features a posthumous appearance from Chadwick Boseman , with the episode’s credits including an emotional tribute to the late actor.
But with fans everywhere saying goodbye to Boseman and his iconic Black Panther character, does episode two really mark the Marvel actor’s final performance in the MCU? Here’s everything you need to know.
Will Chadwick Boseman star in any more episodes of What If…?
The latest episode of What If…? included a tribute message to the Black Panther reading: “Dedicated to our friend, our inspiration, and our hero Chadwick Boseman” right at the end of the episode just before the credits.
However, this won’t be the last time we hear Boseman as T’Challa, with Marvel executive producer Brad Winderbaum confirming to SFX magazine that the actor actually recorded numerous episodes exploring several alternate realities, all set to be released over the coming weeks.
“We obviously had no clue about [Chadwick’s illness] at the time,” he said. “We reached out to him about T’Challa Star-Lord and he was really excited about the concept and really liked the pages.
“He came in, recorded, and had such a good time that we kept writing him [episodes], so he’s in four episodes as three different versions of T’Challa. It’s so humbling to think that he devoted any time to this show in his last year with us.”
How many episodes are there for What If…?
What If…? was originally announced as a 10-episode series, however, it has since been confirmed that there will instead be nine instalments due to coronavirus restrictions during production.
This means the ninth and final episode of the new Marvel TV series will be released on Wednesday, October 6.
New episodes of What If…? are released weekly on Disney+ on Wednesdays at 8am
