It's official: Marvel Studios' recent critical darling Wonder Man is coming back for round two with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley set to return as their endlessly charismatic duo of Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery.
Marvel confirmed the renewal on social media, also indicating that series creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest are also on board for Wonder Man season 2, bringing the whole band back together.
That's great news if you, like many of us, fell in love with Simon Williams and his journey to become the equivalent of an MCU superstar within the Marvel Universe itself. Though Wonder Man didn't bust ratings records, it did take fans and critics by storm thanks to its exploration of a superhuman instead of a superhero. Our own critic gave Wonder Man season 1 four and a half stars out of five.
"Truthfully, if you are going in to watch this show expecting a superhero show that is typically like something you've seen before, I think you will not like the show, if that's all you want," director Destin Daniel Cretton previously told GamesRadar+. "But I also think you'll probably, if you watch it all the way through, surprisingly, fall in love with these characters and find that this show, even though it's not a typical superhero show, to me, uses the genre in a way that is so much more exciting and interesting than just watching two people fight."
I personally loved Wonder Man season 1. It's a refreshing departure from the usual MCU formula, both in its unwavering character driven approach and even its 30-minute sitcom length episodes. The ending leaves a lot more to be explored as well, so I'll be looking forward to seeing where the story goes next.
