Marvel Avengers video game details revealed, trailer released

A scene from “Marvel’s Avengers” video game.

The Avengers assembled again, only it wasn’t on a movie screen.

On Monday night, video game publisher Square Enix revealed the first details of “Marvel’s Avengers,” which will launch on May 15, 2020.

The video game will be available for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Google’s new Stadia streaming service.

Among the game studios working on the Avengers game are Crystal Dynamics, who previously worked on the Tomb Raider franchise; and Eidos Montreal, best known for their work on the popular Deus Ex series.

What should video game players expect when they don the role of an Avenger next year? Here’s everything we’ve learned about the game so far.

Captain America appears to be dead

The story takes place on A-Day, where Earth’s Mightiest Heroes — Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Black Widow — are unveiling a new headquarters in San Francisco. An accident involving a high-tech helicarrier sends the heroes into action. The incident appears to have cost Cap’s live, based on a memorial statue featuring the hero appearing in the game’s trailer. Blamed for the accident, the Avengers disband only to realize five years later the need to bring the team back together.

You’ll likely play as all the featured Avengers

A trailer for the game featured during Square Enix’s press event Monday night shows a few of the characters in action, including The Hulk smash attacking a tank. It’s likely you’ll play from a third-person, over-the-shoulder view, similar to what we’ve seen in “Tomb Raider.”

No, you won’t play as Chris Evans. Or any Chris.

Unfortunately, you won’t see appearances from Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans here. The heroes feature new likenesses setting it apart from Marvel’s blockbuster movie franchise. But the game will feature some heavy hitters in the video game industry, including Nolan North, who previously worked on the Uncharted and Assassin’s Creed games, as Tony Stark; and fellow veteran Laura Bailey (“Marvel’s Spider-Man,” “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate”) as Black Widow.

Outstanding storytelling & an ever-expanding universe come together in the definitive Avengers gaming experience. Master extraordinary abilities, customize a growing roster of Heroes, assemble into teams of up to four players, & defend the Earth from escalating threats.

“This is our original take on these iconic Super Heroes,” said Scot Amos, Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics, in a statement. “Leveraging our companies’ combined experience in epic action-adventure storytelling, we’re building a universe that fans will immerse themselves in for years to come.”

There are a lot of ways to customize your heroes

Part of the game will include unlocking skills and gear to create the version of your favorite superhero you most desire. Players will also gain access to a variety of original and classic costumes. Also, don’t be surprised to see new heroes enter the fight over time.

You can assemble online with friends

Square Enix is promising a story that will be delivered “over multiple years,” with players joining forces with up to three friends online to take on various missions. Developers say any new heroes or content will be available for free.
