Marubeni subsidiary develops smartphone app to measure children's feet

A subsidiary of major trading company Marubeni Corp., which operates children's shoe brand "IFME," has developed a smartphone app to accurately measure children's feet, helping parents choose shoes that perfectly fit for their little ones' fast-growing feet.

With the app named "Pittari IFME" (Perfect IFME), the process for measuring each foot is to place it on an A-4 paper folded in half and then photograph it with a smartphone camera. Based on measurement of the image, the recommended size is displayed.

As small children are likely to fidget or squirm during the measuring, the subsidiary made the photographing method simple and easy. The app has been downloadable on iPhones since early October.

It is said that preschool children's feet grow by about one centimeter a year. Unlike body height and weight, their foot sizes are not measured at nursery schools and kindergartens. Therefore, many parents are at a loss when it comes to choosing suitable shoes for their children. The company recommends measuring the feet every three months.

Foot measurement via smartphone are conducted by other companies such as online fashion marketplace Zozotown, operated by Zozo Inc., but a service focusing on children is rare.
