Marty Morrissey says Brendan Grace's death is a 'huge loss to Ireland'

Marty Morrissey said he feels privileged to have called Brendan Grace a friend.

The veteran sports presenter described the legendary comedian’s death as a “huge loss to Ireland”.

The 68-year-old passed away last week after a short battle with cancer. Recalling how the pair struck up a friendship almost a decade ago, Marty, 60, said: “About nine or 10 years ago Micheal O Muircheartaigh retired from doing All-Ireland Finals on the radio and I started doing them.

“And then I started getting letters from Florida and it was very complimentary and eventually a second letter came and I wrote back and I said, ‘Thank you very much you are so kind, but who is this?’ and he said, ‘It’s Brendan Grace’. I couldn’t believe he took the time to write a
beautiful note to me.

“So then I wanted to meet him and we ended up doing a kind of movie together and he was the judge and I was doing a cameo as a reporter.”

Meanwhile sports commentator turned style judge Morrissey said he is more conscious of keeping up with the fashion stakes today than he was 20 years ago.

The GAA broadcaster will be casting an eye over the fashions at Kerrygold Irish Oaks at The Curragh Racecourse this weekend.

Marty said: ”I’m delighted to team up with an iconic brand like Kerrygold for the Fashions on the Field most stylish competition.

“Obviously, I have a passion for sport, but I also love style and delighted that men can enter this year – so lads get suited and booted this weekend and head to the Curragh.”

Speaking of his own fashion choices, the former Dancing with the Stars contestant added: “I am more conscious of how I look now than I was before.

“That probably has come with the changing attitudes to how men dress.”
