Marty Hurney says Panthers prefer Taylor Moton at right tackle

The Carolina Panthers went into the 2019 NFL draft desperately needing to add more depth at offensive tackle. They did that by adding two picks. First, they traded up for left tackle Greg Little from Ole Miss in round two and then later on they took Dennis Daley from South Carolina in the sixth.

Now that they have all the pieces, the question is how they’ll fit together. This morning, we got an important clue from general manager Marty Hurney. Speaking in an interview with WFNZ, Hurney said the team prefers 2017 second-round pick Taylor Moton to play the right tackle spot.

Moton started at left tackle Week 1 last year, but he had to move over to the right side due to a season-ending injury to Daryl Williams. Moton played very well at right tackle and keeping him at that spot is probably a smart decision.

As for Williams, he signed a one-year deal to return to the Panthers and is the real wild card of the group. He could be used as Moton’s main backup at right tackle. However, the team will be paying him around $6 million this year and that’s a lot of money to leave on the bench. It’s possible he’ll slide inside to left guard to replace Greg Van Roten.

On the other side, Little should be the long-term starter at left tackle. It may take a little while for him to grow into the role, though. Daley is most likely going to be his top backup there.
