Marty Hurney rises 6 spots in annual NFL.com GM power rankings

The Panthers appear to be in good hands with a general manager that faced a lot of criticism in his first attempt at the job. Carolina’s GM Marty Hurney previously spent 10 years with the team before getting a second chance after Dave Gettleman’s sudden exit. Hurney’s second round with the Panthers has proven to be solid so far.

Gregg Rosenthal at NFL.com has shared his new 2019 power rankings for general managers and Hurney went from No. 24 last year to No. 18 this year. Here’s what Rosenthal had to say about Hurney’s work.

“It’s hard to separate the Marty Hurney who ran the Panthers from 2002 to 2012 with the one who returned. . . While the old Hurney got a reputation for handing out bad contracts, the new Hurney followed up a promising 2018 draft (D.J. Moore, Donte Jackson) with a quietly productive free agency period.”

Surviving the change in ownership from Jerry Richardson to David Tepper when so much else has changed is a credit to what Hurney has done.

Hurney deserves praise for the low-cost, high-value moves he’s made in free agency. If he can follow it up with another strong draft class, the Panthers will be in good shape to stay competitive in 2019.
