Comeback kings and Krul's heroics, 5 memorable Newcastle United win at Totteham

Newcastle United travel to Tottenham looking to bounce back to winning ways following a 16-day hiatus. The Magpies have narrowly lost their last two fixtures after conceding to Chelsea and Everton in the closing stages but the squad should be rejuvenated following a mid-season trip to Dubai. Their return to action is a stern test against Antonio Conte’s Champions League hopefuls on Sunday.

Spurs are just three points behind bitter rivals Arsenal in the race for fourth spot and will see this weekend’s clash as a must-win - having won six of the last nine meetings. Harry Kane has bagged three in his last two outings against Newcastle, with those previous two fixtures also coming immediately after an international break.

However, the Magpies have upset the apple cart many times and Spurs’ old ground, White Hart Lane, was a happy hunting ground for Newcastle during the Mike Ashley era. Les Ferdinand, Paul Gascoigne and David Ginola are just a handful of stars who had a huge impact on both clubs, regarded as two of English football’s most prestigious - despite a lack of recent silverware.

ChronicleLive takes a look back at some of Newcastle’s five most recent victories in Tottenham…

30 March 2008 - Spurs 1-4 Newcastle

Darren Bent fired Spurs into an early lead but Nicky Butt’s scruffy goal clawed Newcastle level on the stroke of half-time. Geremi and Michael Owen gave Newcastle an unlikely lead before Martins’ cool finish past Paul Robinson earned Kevin Keegan’s men all three points. This would prove to be the Magpies' last victory at White Hart Lane for over six years.

10 November, 2013 - Spurs 0-1 Newcastle

If Martins was synonymous with the last fixture, this one was all about Tim Krul. The Dutchman had his finest hour in a Newcastle shirt as he made 14 saves - the most ever made in a Premier League game - to keep the Spurs attack at bay. People could be forgiven for forgetting that it was Loic Remy who scored the all-important goal as Krul was the star of the show that day. Newcastle were battered, managing just eight shots to Tottenham’s 31, but somehow Alan Pardew's side secured all three points.

26 October, 2014 - Spurs 1-2 Newcastle

A spirited Toon side came from behind to snatch another win in North London. Sammy Ameobi scored 10 seconds into the second half before Ayoze Perez bagged his first Newcastle goal to claim a vital victory. This was the Magpies’ first win on the road for six months and helped propel them out of the relegation zone.

13 December, 2015 - Spurs 1-2 Newcastle

Another dramatic comeback saw Newcastle win their third-straight game at White Hart Lane and officially become Spurs’ bogey side. After 75 minutes of dross, Steve McClaren’s side somehow pulled a rabbit out the hat with goals from Aleksandar Mitrovic and Perez. The Spaniard’s 93rd-minute winner condemned Mauricio Pochettino to another shock result.

25 August, 2019 - Spurs 0-1 Newcastle

Spurs managed 80% possession against Steve Bruce’s side - the second-highest figure for a losing team in top-flight history. Joelinton’s first goal in English football also handed Bruce his first points as Toon boss, but it was not enough to drag the Magpies out of the bottom three. Regardless, the triumph was a highlight of an otherwise dull two years under his stewardship.
