Martina Navratilova: Tennis legend and Trump critic told to remove 'impeach' cap at Wimbledon

Tennis superstar and outspoken Donald Trump critic Martina Navratilova caused controversy by wearing a cap saying “impeach” during a match at Wimbledon.

The 62-year-old nine-time Wimbledon champ wore the white cap emblazoned with the word in red as she took to the court on Tuesday.

When asked to take it off, as Wimbledon dress codes ban participants from making political statements with their outfits, she reportedly said: “Sorry about that… forgot I had it on.”

She retweeted a post stating she had said this and wrote: “Oops. Not really.”

Her hat was interpreted by many as a dig at President Trump, who she has described in unflattering terms over social media and in interviews.

She has previously called for him to be impeached in posts and claims she wore the hat before in Florida, while she was photographed wearing it in London ahead of an appearance on the BBC.

In a previous tweet she said: “So I drove across central Florida all day yesterday, with my IMPEACH hat on and it got me wondering. Why at trump rallies most people wear the #magahats but I never see them in “public”. Are they all in the closet except for when they are in the majority, full of themselves?”

Some were positive of Navratilova’s stance, stating that they “love” her in response to posts about her wearing the item.

One wrote: “I would not have removed it!! Nothing vulgar, she should have left it on.”

While another said: “I appreciate your commitment to always doing what’s right! Thank you.”
