Martin Docherty was sworn back into the UK Parliament, just days after his landslide election victory.
The SNP member recorded success in the big vote on December 12 - increasing his majority to more than 9000 in the process - with Labour’s Jean Anne Mitchell coming a distant second and the Conservative candidate Alix Mathieson third.
And immediately after the victory Docherty told the Lennox that he believed his party’s performance across Scotland - that saw them secure 48 of the 59 Scottish seats at Westminster - gave them a mandate to call for a second referendum on Scottish independence.
He said: “It’s clear that the Conservatives have a majority but we have a landslide here in Scotland. That’s clear reinforcement as a mandate for independence.
“I’m absolutely delighted to have increased my majority. We were looking at some serious returns for this election and that has borne fruit.
“My pledge is to be as best a constituency MP as I can and to reject everything Boris Johnson puts before the floor of the House of Commons, and to demand Scotland’s right to choose.”
Whilst hours later on Twitter he posted: “It is an immense privilege to be re-elected MP for West Dunbartonshire.
Scotland has voted to go forward together and not backwards with Boris.” And after being sworn in last Tuesday (December 17) the Clydebank native told followers that he was “honoured” to be representing West Dunbartonshire once more.
