Martin Skrtel faces off against Daniel Sturridge in remarkable meeting of ex-Liverpool stars

Trabzonspor's match with Basaksehir in Istanbul brought two former Liverpool players back together last night.

The Turkish Super Lig clash saw Trabzonspor's Daniel Sturridge line-up against Basaksehir's Martin Skrtel and both players had an eventful evening.

After a goalless first half, Trabzonspor were awarded a penalty after Skrtel was adjudged to have handled in the area. The defender was booked and Sturridge stepped up to convert the spot-kick.

Basaksehir were soon level when they too were given a penalty six minutes later. Edin Visca equalised for the home side who began to look for a winner.

It looked like they'd got it when former Manchester City forward Robinho's long-range effort was pushed out to Skrtel who atoned for his earlier error by smashing the ball into the roof of the net.

But the defender would not be the match-winner as on-loan Crystal Palace striker Alexander Sorloth headed home from a corner in the sixth minute of injury time.

Trabzonspor are fourth in the Super Lig table, one point ahead of Basksehir in sixth. Sturridge and Skrtel are due to meet again in March.
