Martin Scorsese to direct Netflix documentary about Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue tour

Martin Scorsese is directing a new Bob Dylan documentary, 14 years after his Grammy-winning film No Direction Home.

The forthcoming movie will be released on Netflix in 2019, under the title Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin ScorseseVariety reported.

As suggested by the title, Scorsese’s new film will focus on Dylan’s 1975-1976 Rolling Thunder Revue Tour, during which he performed in the United States and Canada accompanied by a group of musicians, including Joan Baez.

A description of the new documentary provided by Netflix to Variety reads: “Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese captures the troubled spirit of America in 1975 and the joyous music that Dylan performed during the fall of that year.”

The movie is described as “part documentary, part concert film, part fever dream” – and a source told Variety Scorsese may take liberties with the format of the new film.

This would contrast with the acclaimed No Direction Home, which provided a detailed account of the earlier part of Dylan’s career, including his electric turn in 1965.
