Martin Scorsese: The Irishman director's daughter trolls father over divisive Marvel comments with Avengers wrapping paper

The daughter of Martin Scorsese is not letting her father forget the comments he made about Marvel films earlier this year.

In October, the filmmaker compared the comic book studio’s blockbuster releases to theme park rides during an interview with Empire magazine.

He stated that he had “tried” to watch movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but felt they are “not cinema”.

His comments sparked a debate among film fans and Scorsese went on to clarify his viewpoint in an an opinion piece for the The New York Times.

Now, with the dust settled, his daughter decided to play a festive prank on the filmmaker – by wrapping all of his presents in Avengers-themed wrapping paper.

“LOOK WHAT IM WRAPPING MY DAD’S XMAS GIFTS IN,” she wrote in an Instagram post that has been circulating online.

One person who especially enjoyed this joke was Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, one of several figures associated with the MCU who criticised Scorsese’s views.

“This is Martin Scorsese’s daughter’s wrapping paper for her dad,” he wrote, adding: “Makes me feel less strange about the Shutter Island wallpaper my nephew wrapped my gifts in.”

Scorsese’s latest film, The Irishman, is available to stream on Netflix now. It features on The Independent’s top 20 films of 2019, which you can see here.
