Martin Scorsese has claimed that Marvel films are “not cinema”, in a bold declaration certain to anger thousands of fans.
The director told Empiremagazine that he tried watching the superhero flicks but decided they’re not for him.
“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,” he said.
“Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks.
“It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”
Scorsese is currently preparing for the release of his longest film ever, The Irishman, a crime film starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.
A new trailer for the film gave a closer look at how de-aging techniques were used to give its leads appear younger.
The Irishman will be released on Netflix on 27 November and will air in select cinemas on 1 November.
Marvel, meanwhile, has begun teasing out its Phase Four after wrapping up the Infinity Saga with Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home.
