Martin Roberts has opened up on the heartbreaking reason behind his Full Monty appearance.

He said: "I’m taking part in The Real Full Monty in memory of my best mate of 35 years, David Hughes. He was the same age as me, and 6 years ago he was diagnosed with bowel cancer."

He continued: "Two years later, aged 54, he died, leaving a wife and two teenage daughters. It devastated us all.

"If my involvement in The Real Full Monty encourages even just one person to get checked out sooner than they otherwise would have done, and thereby avoid the pain and suffering that David and his family have gone through, then this will have been the most important show I’ve ever been involved in!!"

The host will be joined by celebrities such as Blue singer Duncan James, model Christine McGuiness and Olympian Colin Jackson - as they bare all for charity.

Some of Martin's co-stars flooded the comments to praise Martin's bravery for taking part in this Christmas' edition.

Christine McGuiness said: "You’re doing great."

Lucy Alexander added: "Amazing cause Martin. Go for it."

Duncan James commented: "You're gonna smash it brother."

Fans also took to the comments to praise Martin's cause.

One user said: "That’s wonderful Martin! Your friend will be watching over you whilst you do this fantastic thing! Good on you."

Marilyn added: "Well done Martin, it will be scary I’m sure, but such a brilliant cause."

Carol posted : "Fabulous darling. Bet he will have a fab laugh looking down at you :) bless his family."

Terry commented: "Wow how brave you are. Well done for supporting a great cause."
