Martin Roberts' wild life - from meeting wife on Mount Kilimanjaro to rock band past

Just weeks after hitting the headlines for personally delivering supplies to the Ukrainian border, Martin Roberts has revealed he had "just hours to live" following emergency heart surgery.

The Homes Under the Hammer star, 58, took to Twitter on Thursday to explain how chest pains turned out to be "massive amounts" of fluid on his heart.

In a video message recorded from the Royal United Hospital in Bath, Martin told his fans: "Had they not got rid of it, which they did in an emergency operation last night, then it’s sort of quite serious, like, hours to live kind of c**p.

"So anyway here I am, still around, thank goodness, thank god and angels, all those things."

Is Martin Roberts married and who is his wife?

As he recovers from his life-saving operation, Martin will no doubt be supported by his wife of twelve years, Kirsty Roberts.

The property expert likes to keep his personal life relatively private but has previously shared the sweet story of how he met his spouse while reporting on an NSPCC charity climb on Mount Kilimanjaro for ITV's Wish You Were Here…?.

"I'd never met my wife Kirsty before, but she was on the climb too raising money," the dad-of-two recalled about their initial meeting.

"Her granny had made her a fruit cake to take and she kept one piece for the summit."

"At the top I collapsed with altitude sickness, and out of the mist came Kirsty bearing this final piece of cake for me, he continued.

He later gushed: "I have to admit – it was love at first bite!"

Martin and Kirsty went on to tie the knot in 2010 and welcome two children into the world together, daughter Megan and son Scott.

After conquering Mount Kilimanjaro, a stint in the Australian jungle was likely easy-going in comparison for the BBC One star.

In November 2016, Martin was one of the famous faces to take part in the 16th series of ITV's I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! - clashing with fellow contestant Larry Lamb during his time on the long-running reality TV show.

The star - who was eliminated from the camp after 15 days - went on to describe the experience as one of the "best things I've ever done", but also compared it to being bullied at school.

"The jungle reminded me of being bullied at school... I've watched the box set of his time in the jungle," Martin confessed on Good Morning Britain in 2017.

"I've since been to schools and talked to kids about it."

What band was Martin Roberts in?

Not content with being a property expert, TV star and Ukrainian refugee hero, Martin can also add 'rock star' to his never-ending resume.

In 2019, the presenter took to his Instagram account to share a major throwback snap where he can seen rocking out as a member of a band in the 1970s.

In the vintage image, taken in 1978, a group of guitarists and a drummer can be seen performing on stage.

“Back in December 1978…a young lad in a school rock band…” Martin captioned the picture.

"There’s a reunion over 40 years on and they’ve asked me to play bass again for the final number," he continued - going on to reveal the band went by the name Super Nova!

Where does Martin Roberts live?

For many years, Martin and his family have lived in Paulton near Bath, Somerset - with the TV presenter even founding a local festival in 2017, Party in the Park.

Martin grew up in Warrington in Cheshire but has made the West of England his home throughout his adult years.

"Somerset has all the plus points of being a rural county but with everything you need to live in 2015," he has previously explained to Visit Somerset.

"You have the beauty of glorious Bath and wonderful Bristol nearby, and yet you are surrounded by the sensational Somerset scenery."
