Martin O'Neill buries the hatchet with Rangers legend over ice chucking incident but Celtic hero can't resist a final dig

Martin O'Neill and Barry Ferguson have buried the hatchet over the infamous derby ice-chucking incident from 20 years ago.

But the former Celtic boss couldn't resist a final dig at the Rangers legend over one of the more bizarre Old Firm flashpoints in history.

Ferguson escaped SFA punishment back in October 2001 after losing his temper in the final moments of Celtic's 2-0 win over Rangers at Ibrox.

He stood accused of launching a bag of ice cubes towards the away dugout as O'Neill's bench celebrated Alan Thompson's injury-time clincher.

O'Neill and Ferguson were reunited on the Go Radio Football Show on Wednesday evening with host Rob McLean joking the former Ibrox captain wanted to start the show with an apology for his moment of madness.

Ferguson laughed: "Listen, that was back in my immature days. I'm not normally on on a Wednesday, Martin. So, they've asked me to come on, there's my apology!"

But O'Neill insisted it was all part and parcel of a fierce rivalry.

He replied: "Barry, I'm delighted. But, first of all, in a genuine sense, no apology needed.

"In fact, that's the type of thing I anticipated, expected and would have been disappointed had you not have done it, believe it or not.

"And I genuinely mean that because, and not wanting to blow your trumpet, one so young having the captain's armband...

"For you, so young, seriously to captain those players you had at your disposal. Ronald de Boer, (Michael) Mols, (Giovanni) van Bronckhorst, (Arthur) Numan, (Stefan) Klos, Fernando Ricksen. It's fantastic.

"You were to Rangers what Neil Lennon was to us at Celtic, not letting people forget the roots of what the football club meant."

But with O'Neill's Celtic victorious on that day, he sensed an opportunity to have the last laugh.

The Irishman quipped: "The ice I used for the champagne later on!"
