Martin Lewis warns holidaymakers on passport problems that could cancel trips

Money man Martin Lewis has warned people who are going on holiday this summer to make sure they apply in plenty of time - and has given his take on what to do if your new document doesn't arrive in time. Mr Lewis was speaking on ITV's This Morning earlier.

There are lengthy delays for passport applications at the moment, due to a combination of staff shortages and a post-Covid travel surge, reports BirminghamLive.

Her Majesty's Passport Office estimates 9.5 million people will make applications this summer. For those that new a need one, applying in plenty of time is essential to avoid problems.

But, for those who end up in that situation, Mr Lewis advised: "The first thing to say is your holiday company - did you have any cancellation rights? If you don't it is a bit like you have entered a tennis tournament and you don't have a racket - well, you still entered it and it's not their fault.

"You have no legal right, but I would always call them up and speak to them politely - can they change the date? Can they give you some form of cancellation? Can they give you vouchers?

"Remembering you have no rights, anything they offer you is better than nothing." He added: "I would call travel insurance but most won't cover this. After that, there really isn't much left."
