Martin Lewis' warning over UK passport delays which could cost people thousands

Are you hoping that your post-lockdown holiday will go ahead?

If so, you'd better check the expiry date on your passport now, Money Saving Expert's Martin Lewis warns.

Delays caused by the pandemic mean some people have reportedly waited as long as three months to receive a new passport - meaning many may be unable to go on holiday, The Manchester Evening News reports.

A woman called Tracy emailed Martin to complain: "Been waiting 13wks. Now looks like our holiday will have to be cancelled, costing us £1,000s."

In his latest email to shoppers, the financial guru said: "Passport at or nearing expiry? Renew ASAP.

"The Passport Office is warning, understandably, that renewing is taking longer than the usual three weeks.

"We're hearing reports that at the extreme, some are taking three months or more, while fast-track services and face-to-face appointments are suspended.

"So if you've a trip planned later this summer sort it quickly."

He added that not having a passport and being unable to travel "isn't covered on most travel insurance policies".

Up until January 2021, you can continue to travel to Europe with your UK passport right up until it expires, so if you've only got a few months left you won't need to worry too much ahead of any summer holidays.

But after that point you'll need to be careful when you check the expiry date on your passport, as it might need renewing sooner than you realise.

Due to Brexit you’ll then need to have at least six months left on an adult or child passport to travel to most countries in Europe.
