Martin Lewis warning of common 'danger debt' to millions

Martin Lewis issued a warning to millions of people about a "danger debt".

Speaking on ITV's This Morning, the money saving expert was answering a call from a viewer which caused him to say "oh dear" and issue the urgent warning.

The caller said she had gone £800 into her overdraft while she was on maternity leave and said she was "struggling to pay anything back", reports BirminghamLive.

She said she had centralised her debts, but Martin claimed this was the wrong thing to do.

She said "I am struggling to pay anything back" and Martin suggested she would likely be better off if her money was tied up in credit cards.

He said: "Oh dear. Look, I need to say this to you and to everybody else. These days, overdrafts are a danger debt.

"They are at 40% APR typically. 40% annual interest.

"Even a normal credit card is 18% so they are over double the cost.

"If you have credit card debts, in most cases, you want to minimise what you are paying on the credit card to reduce your overdraft.

"Overdrafts are a debt and in most cases they are now a very costly debt.

"If you have that debt, you need to start to repay it each month by having more money in your account."

Alternatively, he suggested talking to the bank to see if there was a cheaper place to put her money.
