Martin Lewis' urgent warning for furloughed workers after new Government update

Martin Lewis has issued an urgent warning for furloughed workers following the latest Government update.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the furlough scheme, officially known as the Job Retention Scheme, will close completely in October - but that from July 1 a "new, more flexible furlough" would be in place.

During June, July and August 80% of wages will still be covered by taxpayers.

From September 70% of wages will be covered, and in October 60% of wages will be covered.

Martin issued the latest advice to ITV viewers (ITV)

The scheme will then close.

Mr Sunak said: "As we reopen the economy, there is broad consensus across the political and economic spectrum, the furlough scheme cannot continue indefinitely."

Whilst this may not appear to affect employees, Martin Lewis warned it could have a knock-on effect.

Speaking on his ITV show, Martin explained if your job is seen not seen as viable, an employer may make you redundant.

This is due to the fact that after August, 80% of wages will no longer be paid by the Government.

He said that after August he is expecting a rise in redundancy consultations.

Martin also said he would do a special programme next week focusing on job losses.
