Martin lewis' urgent £280 tax warning to anyone who's worked at home

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has issued a £280 tax warning to millions of Brits who have worked from home during the pandemic.

Appearing on ITV's This Morning, the finance expert explained how people could miss out on hundreds of pounds in tax relief if they've been working from home

He said: "You had to have had extra costs because you have been forced to work at home during the pandemic.

"Now, most people have. You know, heating, electricity, you have had the lights on, you have had the heat on because you have been at home.

"You are entitled either to an extra £6 a week from your employer, but they do not have to give you that. They can give you that and that is tax free income.

"Most employers are not giving that. If they are not giving that, then you can have £6 of your current salary tax free."

And now that also applies for the new 2021/22 tax year too, meaning many are due two years' relief, worth up to £280, reports Birmingham Live.

Alison replied: "Oooh."

According to the official gov.uk website, in April 2020, 46.6% of people in employment did some work at home.

Of those who did some work from home, 86.0% did so as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Of those who did some work from home, around one-third worked fewer hours than usual (34.4%), and around one-third worked more hours than usual (30.3%).
