Martin Lewis says these methods could slash your car insurance by hundreds

Martin Lewis has issued advice to drivers that could potentially save them hundreds.

The money-saving expert dished out his top tips for reducing the cost on Monday's episode of the Martin Lewis Show.

Speaking to viewers, he explained: "Cutting car insurance costs is less about common sense and more about small changes in your behaviour that can bring big price swings."

He continued: "These days, you have to have [car] insurance if you have a car, the only time you don’t need that is if you have a SORN.

"We live in an auto-renewal world."

Martin Lewis' simple advice will slash your car insurance by thousands

Martin added: "[It’s] a world where insurance companies will auto-renew you. So you have continued cover and you don’t break the law."

In a warning to viewers, he went on to say: "But the problem with that is auto-renewal is a sin!

"It is a money-saving sin, and you should not do it."

Get your timing right

The first thing Martin says motorists need to do to get insurance prices down is renewal at the right time - with the ideal time being from 35 to 21 days before your insurance is up.

He says: "It's all bout the date when you get your renewal - 21 days beforehand.

"It's not an exact science, but it shows how timing it can make a big difference for everyone.

"When it comes to car insurance, be the early bird who catches the worm."

Don't just do the 'logical' thing

You might think insurance would be cheaper if you said you were parking in a car park instead of a driveway, but that's not always the case.

"It's all based on actuarial risk," Martin says.

This is the system insurers use to compare how many people claim, and what they enter into their forms. This means it's based on pure numbers of what people have done in real life before, rather than any idea of who is safer.

Use comparison sites

Martin said that you should try using different comparison sites. "I use at least three," he said.

That's because deals are done between sites and insurers - so the same insurance could be cheaper on one than another.

You also need to add in Direct Line and Aviva - as they don't appear on comparison sites - and if you have more than one car in your household check out the multi car deals available from Admiral, Aviva and LV as that's sometimes cheaper too.

Once you know the policy you want - Martin advised people to haggle, to see if their existing insurer will beat it.
