Martin Lewis says his wife is 'way tighter' with money than him and he tells her to tip

Martin Lewis has teased that his wife Lara Lewington is "way tigher" than he is, despite his fame as a financial expert.

The journalist, 49, is known for providing consumer advice on saving money, including through the MoneySavingExpert website, which he founded.

And whilst it's him who has a reputation for being frugal, he has revealed that his wife Lara, 42, - who co-presents BBC technology show Click - is even "tighter" than him.

Martin - who has been married for more than a decade - opened up about his wife during a discussion with Nihal Arthanayake, 50, on his BBC Radio 5 Live show.

Martin appeared on the radio show earlier this week and asked listeners to get in touch to share how they manage their finances as part of a couple.

This included one listener who discussed her relationship with Martin and Nihal, with her stating that she and her partner are "quite similar" when it comes to finance.

Her comments prompted Martin to mention his own marriage, with him stating that although he has a reputation for saving money, it's Lara who is "tigher" with spends.

He said: "I've said it before and I shall say it again. She's actually out of the country filming so I'm definitely safe to say it at the moment - my wife is way tighter than I am."

Martin said that although people suspect he is the one who is more frugal, it's actually his wife. He commented: "You have to unclasp her fingers to get y'know a quid out.

"I'm like, 'you could leave them a tip you know.'"

Martin also told listeners his wife is more handy than him around the house.

The TV star, who shares a nine-year-old daughter with Lara, said: "In my household we each have spheres of influence, that's my jokey name for them.

"When it comes to DIY and changing plugs, I know who's better at that and it is not me. Same with tech, as I'm married to a tech journalist."

His wife Lara has been filming in Sweden this week for tech programme Click, with her having posted photos from the experience on her Instagram account in recent days.

"Incredible shoot in Sweden, driving a 'flying' boat, taking control of a boat via a watch and generally having a brilliant adventure on some very icy waters," she wrote recently.

The presenter thanked her production crew and revealed that whilst there had been "a few slips on the ice," none of them actually fell into the water during filming.
