Money saving guru Martin Lewis has made clear what your rights are if you buy something - and then the price plunges in a deal.
The thrift buying expert in his The Martin Lewis Money Show Live Christmas Special on Tuesday November 24 also spoke about how people should approach Black Friday.
A viewer got in touch with the show to ask: “If I buy an item and that item is then reduce in the Black Friday sales am I entitled to be refunded the difference?”
Martin replied: “No there’s absolutely no rules on fair pricing in retail in the UK. I could sell you a biro pen for 20 grand and if you accepted it and I hadn’t misled you that would be the price.
“If I sold it the next day to someone for 10p there are no rules.
“So all you could do is you could ask if you could go and get a refund. There’s nothing wrong with asking.
“Or if you ordered it online which you may have done. If you’re in England at the moment most shopping’s online. Then if it’s within 14 days notify them that you want to return it, get the refund at the price you paid then you re-buy it right now would be the other way to do it.”
Mr Lewis spoke out on Black Friday saying that he was very against people being led into buying things that they don’t need.
He said: “Let’s take the basic premise of any discount. If you were planning to buy a video game for £50 and it’s available for £25, you’ve saved £25.
“If they have tweaked your spending nipples to buy something you wouldn’t otherwise buy there’s a cost of £25 therefore it’s not a saving.
“Black Friday, I’ve never liked these ‘we’ve one TV, 50 in stock for £10 instead of £1000 - that’s a competition. Where it’s useful is if you’ve got a list you know what you want you create your list and stores have store wide discounts so you can buy it 30 per cent cheaper. This is likely in many cases the cheapest you’ll be able to buy something before Christmas.”
