Martin Lewis reveals when self employed Brits can expect to be contacted and paid by HMRC via coronavirus furlough scheme

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has revealed when self employed Brits on the coronavirus furlough scheme can expect to be paid and contacted by HMRC.

Appearing on today's episode of This Morning, the financial guru joined hosts Phil and Holly via a live web-stream to answer various questions from callers.

The first caller, Lee, asked whether he should wait or not to be contacted by HMRC, to which the 47-year-old cleared up for him by revealing confirmed dates he received "a couple of days ago".

"This week we've seen the furlough scheme for employers open," He told Lee. "And lots of self employed people have asked me 'well when is our scheme coming, and how do we apply? Because employers apply'

"Well you don't apply."

Martin then went on to explain the plan of action self-employed Brits can expect over the next two months.

He said: "What's going to happen - I got confirmation a couple of days ago actually, it's the first time they've said dates - you're going to be contacted in mid-May.

"I presume it'll be by letter, but I'm not sure 100 per cent sure yet, and I will let people know when because there are so many coronavirus scammers."

Before revealing what month payments will given out, the money expert warned Lee - and viewers watching from home - about fake HMRC letters and scams to look out for.

"You need to be careful you get the legit contact," He insisted. "So I'll be putting details out there on social media and on This Morning, I hope, about what that is."

He then added: "So expect that mid-May and expect the payment in June."

Martin Lewis reveals how every home worker can claim extra cash due to coronavirus

Martin said that amount people should expect to receive will be based on an average taken from the past few years.

He said: "And it'll be roughly, a quarter of your year's normal profits of your business - profits based on your average between 2016 and 2019.

"So just sit on your hands at the moment."

However, for anyone in need of some cash, Martin reminded anyone watching to consider applying for Universal Credit.

"If you're really short of cash for anyone else watching, you can apply for Universal Credit, even if you are likely to get the self employment income support scheme.

"You don't have to sit on your hands and wait, you can apply for Universal Credit now."
