Martin Lewis has warned customers not to be caught out by the latest energy price cap.
Tomorrow, energy regulator Ofgem will confirm the new price cap that lasts for six months starting April 1.
This is the max firms can charge for their standard tariffs on typical usage to protect customers on poor value default or standard variable tariffs.
But whilst Martin is predicting a drop of £25 to £60 per year for those on standard billed tariffs, he says it might not be the best deal.
Martin said: "The current cap is £1,178 per year for someone on typical usage; use more it’ll be higher, use less and it’ll be lower.
"The new cap could be as low as about £1,120 per year, but the cheapest tariffs on the market are about £800 per year for the same usage.
"So don't be fooled - a fair price isn't a cheap one."
Martin revealed his simple hack to find you the best price.
He said: "Compare now to find your cheapest, using Martin’s Cheap Energy Club, which also gives you £25 cashback if it can switch you.
"Or [use] any Ofgem approved site - some of the top tariffs from big names are ONLY available via comparison sites, like EDF’s Simply Online 1 Year Fix Feb21v3 tariff at £870 per year and British Gas Energy Plus Protection Feb 2021v4 at £875 per year.
"Both tariffs also let existing customers switch to it, so if you’re currently with it, it’s a no-brainer saving. With both tariffs if you don’t already have a smart meter you’ll need to get one if possible."
