Martin Lewis reveals shopping basket hack to get money off from online retailers

Martin Lewis has revealed a cunning hack to get online retailers including supermarkets to give you special deals.

Speaking on The Martin Lewis Money Show Live Christmas Special on Tuesday November 24 on ITV the savings expert reckons that although this doesn’t work all the time, it’s worth a try.

The secret is to put something you want in your basket. And then DON’T buy it.

Mr Lewis then explained that in some cases the vendor will get in touch offering you a discount on the item.

On the show he explained:  “Abandon online shopping basket to try to score a discount.

“Sign in somewhere you’ve registered, add an item.

“Walk away. Don’t buy it.

“You may well within a few days be sent a code to entice you back.

“People have reported success in Asos, New Look, Asda and Tesco.

“One there from M&S from my researcher. She got 10 per cent off M&S recently just by leaving stuff in the shopping basket. One to try - doesn’t always work.”

On the same show Mr Lewis also spoke about Black Friday saying that he was very against people being led into buying things that they don’t need.

He said: “Let’s take the basic premise of any discount. If you were planning to buy a video game for £50 and it’s available for £25, you’ve saved £25.

Martin Lewis reveals what your rights are if you buy something in a Black Friday deal - and it goes down in price

“If they have tweaked your spending nipples to buy something you wouldn’t otherwise buy there’s a cost of £25 therefore it’s not a saving.

“Black Friday, I’ve never liked these ‘we’ve one TV, 50 in stock for £10 instead of £1000 - that’s a competition. Where it’s useful is if you’ve got a list you know what you want you create your list and stores have store wide discounts so you can buy it 30 per cent cheaper. This is likely in many cases the cheapest you’ll be able to buy something before Christmas.”

The Martin Lewis Money Show is on ITV on Thursdays  from 8.30 - 9pm.
