Martin Lewis reveals how drivers and home owners could halve cost of insurance renewal

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has revealed how drivers and home owners could halve their insurance - depending on the date they apply.

Consumers all over the UK often dread the time renewal comes around, with many sure they could get a better deal elsewhere.

But a simple trick could save a packet on their premiums every year.

Speaking on ITV's the Money Show, Lewis said leaving things to the last minute could be financially fatal.

Renewals will be high 31 or more days before the day of the holder's last payment.

But the the best comparisons are available "21 days before you renew", meaning drivers could save up to half of their yearly insurance cost.

According to the money saving expert, the same also applies for home insurance, but any longer than 21 days and premiums start going up.

He said the longer the customer leaves renewing, the "risker" they appear to the provider.

Lewis also advised using multiple comparison sites, as insurers often give different prices depending on the platform.

For drivers, adding a responsible second driver could also be essential for young or inexperienced drivers who want to push the price down.

Comprehensive cover could also be cheaper, as third party 'indicates you could be a bigger risk'.
