Martin Lewis praised for 'rattling' Rishi Sunak over 'sickening' energy price hike

Martin Lewis was praised for leaving Rishi Sunak "rattled" on tonight's edition of Money Show Live.

The finance guru interviewed the Chancellor on Thursday's edition of the popular ITV programme.

Martin grilled Mr Sunak on the government's policies after Ofgem confirmed the energy price cap will rise by 54% in April due to surging wholesale gas prices.

The Money Saving Expert branded the increase as "sickening" as the average bill will rise by £693.

Mr Sunak announced a raft of support schemes aimed at easing the pressure on millions, which include a flat £200 bill-credit loan for all domestic electricity customers in England, Scotland and Wales.

Energy customers will repay £40 per year from April 2023 for the next five years.

Martin took requests from the public for what he should ask the Chancellor, which included "why the hell is he not giving us more" and "why the hell do we have to pay anything back."

Mr Sunak explained the loan scheme has been introduced rather than a tax on energy companies to not "deter investment" and claimed the measures introduced would "take the sting" out of the price hike.

However, the finance guru slammed the support scheme and warned many will be thrown into fuel poverty.

He said: "I think what you've done today will forestall for many the choice between heating and eating, but not for all."

There will also be a non-repayable £150 council tax discount and the warm home discount is to rise from £150.

There will also be a discretionary fund of £144m available to those who don't receive the council tax discount, which the Chancellor confirmed was introduced after liaising with Martin Lewis.

Viewers on Twitter praised the Money Saving Expert for his important work and claimed the Chancellor was "rattled" during the grilling.

Lucy said: "We are so lucky to have a financial journo like @MartinSLewis in our country. Wish that segment with the chancellor could have been longer

Jacqueline added: "Brilliant, clear, really helpful programme, thank you. Wish all in Govt were questioned and held to account as well as @RishiSunak was by you tonight. #MartinLewis"

Debra added: "Rishi is ready to sprint off that sofa Martin he is looking very uncomfortable you have rattled him"

Natasha posted: "Rishi Sunak looks like he’s about to fall off that chair. What’s up, doesn’t he want to be there."

Aimee commented : "Thank you #MartinLewis . You make all of this so much easier to understand, if ever in doubt…listen to Martin! I just wish @ITV would give your show longer than half an hour when its on something as important as tonight’s and affects millions!"

The Martin Lewis Money Show airs Thursdays at 8.30pm on ITV and the ITV Hub
