Martin Lewis pleads with Sainsbury's to change its money-saving deal

Martin Lewis has launched a plea for bosses at Sainsbury's to change their latest double your money offer.

Every year people save up their Sainsbury's loyalty points waiting for the perfect moment to get the most value out of them for Christmas.

That time is almost here, seeing people able to double the Nectar points they spend in store.

But the MoneySavingExpert.com  founder points out that now is quite possible the worst time to do it.

"Sainsbury's urgently needs to rethink its double-up scheme," Martin said.

“While its supermarkets are open, to only allow redemptions in-store, and only for a week right in the midst of lockdown for most of the population, is perverse."

The Sainsbury's promotion lets customers double their Nectar points between 11 and 17 November - but the vouchers can’t be spent online.

When MoneySavingExpert.com asked yesterday if will change its event as a result of lockdown, Sainsbury's said the promo is set to continue as planned, with vouchers only redeemable in-store.

"It really shouldn’t need to be told this," Martin said.

"Many people wait and hold on to their Nectar points to use them in the pre-Christmas period double-up.

"To force them to go to a store now, rather than spend in ease and safety via the web, is simply putting people’s health at risk for no reason.”

And Martin wants top bosses at the store to step in.

After Martin issued a "plea" to take the event online too, he added that the issue should be taken up by the top bosses when someone from Sainsbury's replied.

"This isn't a legal question its about morals, ethics and compassion," Martin Tweeted.

"You're forcing people to go instore or miss out, many don't feel safe, or are extremely clinically vulnerable.

"May I request and suggest you refer this answer up to your CEO."

A Sainsbury’s spokeswoman told Mirror Money: “We have reviewed our Double Up promotion in light of the latest restrictions. Many of our customers have told us they are relying on the savings it will give them and so after careful consideration we will continue to offer it.

“We understand that some of our customers may not be able to redeem their vouchers in the way they would have liked to this year and we’re sorry for the disappointment this may cause. Customers who have already redeemed their points for vouchers and are now required to shield can contact our customer services team, who will refund their points.”
