Martin Lewis has spoken out in emotional disbelief after learning that yet another innocent person has lost thousands of pounds to an online scam using his name — and this time, it hit particularly hard.
During a live segment on ITV’s This Morning, Martin joined via video link, only to be blindsided when hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard revealed a viewer’s husband had been conned by a cryptocurrency scheme falsely claiming to have Martin’s endorsement. The scam had been circulating on social media, complete with fake adverts featuring his face, reported the Mirror.
Clearly shaken, Martin said: “Well, I’m very sorry to hear it. It’s just ridiculous that it’s still going on.” And you could see the frustration all over his face.
He didn’t hold back in slamming both the current and past governments for what he sees as a complete failure to stand up to the tech giants, enabling these scams. “It is ridiculous that the current government and past government haven’t had the balls to take on big tech and their scams,” he said. “They have not properly regulated them… They need to make it more expensive for them to publish these scam ads with huge fines and huge levies against them if they do.”
Martin’s been on the frontline of this fight before — he famously sued Facebook six years ago over these very same fake ads. But despite that legal win, the scams keep popping up, often unchecked. “We live in the wild west when it comes to scam adverts at the moment,” he warned.
This particular scam didn’t just misuse Martin’s image — it also featured Dragons’ Den entrepreneur Steven Bartlett. And that combination, sadly, seemed credible enough to convince someone to hand over their hard-earned money.
Martin admitted the whole thing had left him “heartbroken,” especially knowing his face, a symbol of financial trust for so many, had been used to mislead.
The story sparked a wave of responses online. One angry viewer vented, “I’m sick of seeing those s**t ads on here, some of the accounts have been on here for years and have never posted, but because they’re paying for a blue tick.” Another added: “I would steer clear of anything with Lewis or Bartlett on, genuine or not.” And a third offered a more cautious take: “Never risk anything you can’t afford to lose.”
