Martin Lewis issues warning to millions of furloughed staff over new rules

Martin Lewis has issued workers who are still furloughed as new rules come into effect.

In September, the government will pay 70 per cent of wages up to a cap of £2,187.50 for the hours the employee is on furlough.

This is 10% less than at the start of the scheme.

Employers will pay national insurance and pension contributions and top up employees' wages by 10% to ensure they receive 80% of their wages up to a cap of £2,500, for time they are furloughed.

This will then lead to the final month of the scheme in October where the government will pay 60% of wages up to a cap of £1,875 for the hours the employee is on furlough.

However, Martin has warned that some employers may not be playing by the book, the Mirror reports.

In a warning to workers, he said employees should check their payslips to ensure they're being paid correctly, in his weekly  MoneySavingExpert newsletter.

The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme has supported millions of workers and employers since it was introduced a bid to save jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But with Boris Johnson saying on Wednesday that the furlough scheme won't be extended, it will officially come to an end on October 31.

Downing Street confirmed on Tuesday that HMRC is looking into 27,000  potentially fraudulent claims  of the furlough scheme.

This is more than three times the amount of reports of potential furlough fraud HMRC said it was investigating last month.
