Martin Lewis issues warning to everyone with an old mobile phone ahead of Christmas clear out

Financial guru Martin Lewis has issued a warning to anyone who has a mobile phone.

He was on our screens for The Martin Lewis Money Show on ITV and was giving tips on how to reduce energy costs and save money all while doing your bit to help save the environment.

With COP26 in full swing, environmentally friendly advice was the main topic but he had a warning to those with mobiles, even more so for those who have old handsets knocking about in a drawer collecting dust, Daily Record reports.

While some people may be inclined to have a Christmas clear out this year, Martin cautioned his viewers not to throw the old phones away.

Martin explained: “If you’ve got an old mobile handset do not throw it away as it is terrible for the environment - batteries, lead, beryllium, flame retardants could all cause environmental harm if you chuck it away and it goes into landfill.”

And the consumer champion added that you could sell your old handset for as much as £180.

He said: “Get yourself on to a comparison site like sellmymobile.com and compareandrecycle.co.uk and see if you can flog it.”

While the price you get offered will depend on the age of your phone and the condition it’s in, Martin said older iPhones could fetch up to £150 and Samsung handsets up to £180.

He said: “Relatively, not that new iPhones and Samsung's can be worth up to £180."

Martin told viewers: “Not much protection with these sites though so do check reviews and once you send it to them they might say ‘there’s a scratch on it so we’re not giving you as much’, but still, it’s far better than binning it.”

Most mobile network providers also offer customers cash for recycling their old phones if they are upgrading, but you can still recycle even if you’ve had your new handset for a while.

Just go to the website where you got your mobile phone and search for recycling options.

You can watch The Martin Lewis Money Show on ITV at 8.30 on Thursday November 11.
