Martin Lewis issues warning ahead of traffic light system allowing travel to 'green list' countries

From Monday people in the UK will be able to travel abroad to some of the 12 'green list' countries.

The UK's new traffic light system will come into force leading to people being able to travel abroad again

Ahead of the changes, finance expert Martin Lewis has issued several travel warnings.

He said eager Brits should book with caution and said some people won’t be able to travel for weeks – or even months – due to rules in many of the 12 countries on the green list, the Mirror reports.

Speaking in this week’s MoneySavingExpert email, he said: “ Even after Mon, it's still unpracticable for most to go abroad. Yet many are considering booking now for late summer or autumn trips, or for further ahead.”

He added: “Permission to go doesn't mean they'll let Brits in. Most green destinations have stringent entry requirements."

For example, Israel won’t be welcoming passengers until May 23 and Portugal still has a ban, although an update is expected this week.

The Government is introducing a traffic light system which means green list passengers won’t need to self-isolate on their return.

Passengers travelling to green list countries require a pre-departure test, no quarantine and a PCR test on day two.

The amber list will require a pre-departure test, self-isolating at home for 10 days and PCR tests on days two and eight.

The red list will involve a pre-departure test, followed by mandatory hotel quarantine for 10 days, as well PCR tests on days two and eight. No test and release will be available in this scenario.

Mart Lewis advised that people should aim for flexibility, protection and minimum risk when booking a holiday.

When suggesting where to travel in the future, he said The USA, Europe and other developed countries are likely to be the best bets as the entry requirements are based on the vaccine rollout.

He also said insurers will not cover you for cancellations due to government rule changes – such as a fourth lockdown - meaning you could lose out if you cannot amend your holiday.

He suggested that people should book flexible holidays and flights and compare package breaks where possible as these are covered by Package Travel Regulations laws that guarantee a refund.
