Martin Lewis issues urgent warning to drivers as new rules launch in 48 hours

Martin Lewis has issued an urgent warning to drivers as the Government's MoT exemption window is set to slam shut.

MoT tests were suspended back in March for 6 months to ensure key workers could keep driving during the coronavirus lockdown.

But now the Department for Transport has said tests will be recommencing on August 1, bringing an end to the period of automatic exemption, the Liverpool Echo reports.

That means drivers can't afford to relax as being caught on the roads without at valid MoT certificate could mean a fine of up to £2,500.

Martin said: "Compulsory testing restarts next week in England, Scotland and Wales.

"If your MOT is due on or after 1 August, it's business as usual."

He added: "Yet for MoTs due between 30 March and 31 July, you automatically have six months added on top, eg, 24 July becomes 24 January 2021.

"In Northern Ireland testing's still on hold, and MoTs have been extended by 12 months."

The test extension worked by automatically extending MoT expiry dates by 6 months. This happened about a week before it was due to expire.

This means that:

  • your vehicle will still have a valid MoT certificate for an extra 6 months
  • you can still tax your vehicle - you might need to wait to do this until later in the month if  both your MoT and vehicle tax run out this month
  • your insurance will still be valid
  • your vehicle’s record will be updated so the police can see you have a valid MoT

People were told to check their expiry date had been extended three days before their MoT was originally due to expire.

The DVSA said you will not get a new paper MoT certificate with the new expiry date on it.
