Martin Lewis issues urgent MOT warning to 11million drivers - check now

More than 11million drivers are being urged to check their vehicles as the first wave of MOT extensions come to an end following the coronavirus lockdown.

Around 11.3million MOTs are due in the next three months and drivers who miss the deadline could be slapped with a £1,000 fine.

Consumer expert Martin Lewis said motorists should act now to avoid a penalty - which applies if you're caught using your vehicle without a valid MOT.

In March, the DVSA introduced a six month extension on all MOTs that were due during the pandemic.

It said anyone whose car check was due between March 30 and July 30 would have their deadline extended by six months.

This applied from the due date, for example if your MOT was due on July 6, 2020 it would be extended to January 6 2021.

However those that were due at the start of lockdown will be approaching the new deadline.

According to motoring chain Kwik Fit, 11.3million vehicles are due for their MOTs between now and December.

How long do I have to book my MOT?

If you were granted a six month extension, the deadline will be six months from the date your initial MOT was due.

As a result, not everyone will have to book their car check in the coming months.

For instance, if it was due on July 17, you won't have to do book your check until January 17.

However,  if it was due on April 2, you will have to book it by October 2.

MOT tests were made mandatory again in Britain on August 1.

If your car's MOT was due up to or on July 31, it would be automatically extended by six months.

It said anyone who fell into this category would be exempt for six months, unless their vehicle is unsafe to drive.

AA president Edmund King added: “It makes sense to reintroduce MOT testing now that Covid-19 restrictions are being lifted and all garages and dealerships are open.

"Car traffic is on the increase already and will grow as more drivers return to the road with the re-opening of hospitality and travel with their families for ‘staycation’ holidays.

"The extension was a pragmatic move to help drivers in self isolation but as services resume we agree that reintroducing the MOT with good advance notice will help drivers and make our roads safer."
